Since its inception in 2021, StoryLabs has been a pioneering force in creating community-focused workspaces in Atascadero. Their latest expansion, which took place in March 2024, followed an extensive six-month renovation of the historic Decou Lumber building, which has served the community since 1950.

According to partner Greg Squires, StoryLabs operates as a vibrant hub where local professionals can engage in productive and collaborative work. He articulates that it also functions as a space where remote workers and small business owners can utilize private suites, dedicated desks, flexible memberships, and fully equipped meeting rooms. These offerings not only support individual work but also foster essential networking opportunities, allowing members to form valuable connections that enhance their work lives.

With over 80 individuals utilizing their new facility, Greg highlights that this location is a key component of a larger initiative known as The Co-Op on El Camino Real. “This broader development is thoughtfully designed to foster connections, promote learning, and stimulate creativity,” he elaborates. The Co-Op not only houses StoryLabs but also includes industrial workspaces and makerspaces, thus creating a dynamic ecosystem for local entrepreneurs and creatives.

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, serving as a clear indication that Atascadero has a significant population of remote workers and small enterprises eager for both connection and community support. “The response from the community has been super encouraging. It’s a signal that our area possesses a substantial number of remote professionals and small business owners looking to engage and collaborate with each other,” Greg reveals.

StoryLabs firmly advocates the philosophy that “a more interconnected community leads to a more vibrant society and propels a thriving economy.” While they are dedicated to supporting their members, the organization goes beyond mere workspace provision. They actively facilitate human development workshops and business development sessions, and they strive to create pathways for entrepreneurs and emerging local leaders to connect with mentors and potential funding sources. Greg notes that this holistic approach ensures that members are not just working in solitude but are engaged in a supportive community that encourages growth and collaboration.
