The Situation: Feeling Misled and Ripped Off

Looks like I have my answer and just have to hope that Fixter are feeling at all sympathetic and decide to refund me anything when I talk to them on Monday.

Background: Booking a Service

On Friday, I took my car in for a service. I used an online site called Fixter to get the booking and they act as a middle man between customer and garage.

The Unexpected Extras

A few hours after dropping it off, I get an email from Fixter listing a bunch of extra work they feel needs to be done otherwise the car will probably fail its next MOT.

  • Brake fluid flush & replacement – £60.00
  • Fuel system treatment – £64.99
  • Engine flush – £64.99

I was under the impression, based on these prices and being told they would prevent an MOT failure, that this would be another few hours work and these were complicated things that a mechanic would need to do.

The Revelation: A Lack of Transparency

Eight minutes after receiving a confirmation email on the extra work, I received an email saying my car was ready, and I realised that I had been taken advantage of.

I went to the garage and the mechanic told me the Engine flush & Fuel system treatment was just adding chemicals to the system, no actual labour as such, and the Brake fluid flush & replacement was done in a few minutes by a machine.

The Shocking Prices

Engine flush & Fuel system treatment chemicals cost about £5 each at Halfords, so drastically up-marked to £65. The Brake fluid flush & replacement was charged at £15 for Brake Fluid and £45 for 0.7h of labour, when I know it only took eight minutes (incidentally, the rate for this labour isn’t the same rate for the labour on the service, so something feels wrong there).

The Result: Feeling Misled and Ripped Off

So, being charged £190 for 8min work and £20 of fluids has left me feeling very misled and ripped off. I am hoping on Monday to talk them into a partial refund to get this down to a less predatory price, but if that fails, do I have any chance at being able to do a charge back via my credit card, or is this just going to be a very expensive life lesson?
