JB’s Restaurant in Rexburg Closes After 51 Years

REXBURG – JB’s Restaurant, a beloved establishment in Rexburg for over five decades, abruptly shut its doors on Monday, leaving customers and employees shocked and saddened by the news.

Manager Demri Trevizo shared with EastIdahoNews.com that she recently found out about the restaurant being sold to Jake Muller, the owner of Red Rabbit Grill and Pizza Pie Cafe. The deal is currently in the final stages of completion.

As the sale is still pending, Muller has not disclosed specific plans for the future of the property. However, Trevizo confirmed that JB’s will be permanently closing its doors, paving the way for a new tenant to take over the space soon.

“It was a shock. I didn’t even have the chance to inform my regular morning customers,” Trevizo expressed.

The decision to sell the restaurant stemmed partly from the passing of the previous owner, Robert Wheaton, last October. His wife, who took over ownership, found it challenging to manage the business and decided to put it up for sale.

Wheaton had been the proprietor of JB’s in Rexburg for numerous years. The original owner of the establishment remains unclear.

The JB’s franchise was established by Jack Broberg in 1961, as per an old newspaper article. It originated as an affiliate for Big Boy Restaurants in Provo, Utah.

“Broberg selected the location due to the significant number of students at Brigham Young University in Provo hailing from Southern California, where Big Boy was a popular choice,” the report detailed.

The Rexburg branch commenced operations in 1971.

JB’s terminated its association with Big Boy in 1988.

By 1995, at the peak of the restaurant’s success, there were 104 branches nationwide. However, the chain eventually succumbed to financial difficulties, leading to its closure in 2019 following a series of bankruptcies.

Trevizo noted that the Rexburg outlet is now the lone remaining JB’s restaurant in Idaho and one of the few remaining stores across the country.

Reflecting on her seven-year tenure at the Rexburg eatery, Trevizo expressed being “heartbroken” over its closure.

“I have dedicated a significant amount of time to this place,” she tearfully shared. “Watching it go is truly difficult. Our regular customers have become like family to us.”

She expressed her fondness for interacting with patrons and will miss those connections dearly.
