M husband passed away 25+ years ago, leaving me with a minor child. He made about $45,000 and my monthly check was around $1300.

You will received a benefit until your child is 18 and has graduated from high school – whichever happens last. Use these next 3 years to prepare to support yourself. When I got close to his graduation, I banked 100% of that check to see if I could survive without it. That gave me peace of mind – and also gave me a lump sum to help with his college education. But if you do save it all – report to SS that you spent it all on the child. There used to be an annual report to fill out that asked this. If you report you saved it for the child, you are mandated to turn it over to the child when they turn 18. No 18 year old needs a lump sum of cash!

Also be aware that SS considers the child to be a legal adult when they turn 18, so the check then goes to the child, not to you as their guardian! (I know – screwed up since you’re getting the check because they’re still in high school!). By that time, I was surviving without the monthly SS, so I told my child they could either bank it all and I would continue to support them….or they could pay me rent to continue to live there and eat my food. I pointed out what they could do with $10,000 by the time it ended….they saved the money.

My daughters father made about $45k a year for 25 years leading up to his death. Maybe a little less in the early years. We get $1241 a month in survivors benefits. She is his only child.

Was the $50K actual wages (FICA taxes paid on), or was he self-employed (and the $50k was gross income, not accounting for expenses and FICA taxes paid on much less? Another possible scenario is: Did he work for an employer that did not pay into Social Security? How old was your spouse, when they passed?

Depending on the questions above, no potential estimate can be made.

Likely somewhere between 1200-1600 if I had to guess

They will tell you the actual numbers next week.

Since he had such a great job, I would estimate 800 to 1000 monthly. My grandkids got 600 a month and their mother barely worked so your son will get much more.
