A guy I grew up with is famous on Instagram and YouTube has nearly 1 million followers for riding street bikes and that’s how he made a living. He’s never shown his face on social media, he got doxxed last year and hasn’t been active since. I think he also lost his sponsorships.

I’ve been out in the public eye for about 10 years now. It was not, initially, by choice. I was “outed” by an AP reporter who wrote an article that did some numbers. At that time, I was about 8 years out from my crime, and had built a life but I wasn’t open with people beyond my immediate circle about my past. That, of course, changed overnight. I thought at the time, as with most things that are terrible and frightening, that it was the worst thing that could have happened. And as with most of those things, in my experience, it was actually the best thing that could have happened. I thought it would kill me, but it saved me from a torturous existence.

I wouldn’t call myself even semi-famous, but fame was never really what I was after. All my social media is under or tied to my very googleable name, so it’s trivial for anyone to find out my story, more so because I’ve written and spoken about it very openly.

To be sure it’s not been without costs. I’ve been stalked, harassed, had death threats (few serious, most idle), but also, I think every dollar and relationship I’ve made over the at least the last several years is directly traceable to the decision to be public.

So it’s a choice everyone has to make for themselves, and I don’t fault anyone for choosing different. There are a few people who are also public, and successful. I think the lesson we’ve learned is that yes, the doxxing and harassment will come, and there’s not much you can do about that. What you can do is choose how to respond. People who do stuff like that are cowards at heart, or at least, behave like cowards. If you run, they’ll chase you. If you stand your ground, they lose interest pretty fast. Once you’ve been through a few cycles of it, it kind of loses its bite.

I think if anyone wants to be in the public eye, they have to anticipate that it will happen.

Sure, it’s possible, but you always run the risk of being doxxed. I wouldn’t sit and stress about that, but I would have a plan in place in case it happens.

This happened to me, and I was doxxed. It’ll shock you how much you’ll be able to adjust to. While I thought this was the worst scenario at the time, this was really a blessing in disguise as I’m now able to focus on everything that’s important.

What state are you in that doesn’t have L1 on the public registry? Thank you.

  • Sea-Adhesiveness-309

NY makes you L3 when you move there though right? Ialso know Oregon is no public registry for L1. Wonder what states L1 gets off registry fastest. Like say a possession of CP charge. Or Federal enticement charge. Researching for others. Thank you.

    Mike Tyson is pretty famous…

IMHO I think it’s possible, but you have to be prepared on being outed. I personally have a talking track ready to roll in my head if/when I get outed. It’s nothing fancy. Sticking to the facts. Own my offense in a way that I take accountability for my actions and leave it at that. If people want to judge me after that, then that’s on them and has no reflection on who I am now and or have become.
