It has been quite some time since my last post here. My boyfriend has been incarcerated in federal prison for a year and a half now. Recently, we received news that he is being recommended for Home Confinement, with a possible check-in at the Halfway House, scheduled for December. I don’t have information about home confinement, but you may want to check with the Feds to make sure that he will be allowed to live in your home – have they mentioned any residence restrictions?

Home confinement conditions are customized based on the person, crime, situation, state laws, etc…
Housing has to be approved by The PO. There are cases where they can’t, but usually people can work – often it’s actually a requirement that they do. He will have a set of conditions from the judge, the BOP, and the PO. I know the not-knowing is frustrating when you want to be able to prepare, but they’re really the only ones who can answer that.
I was on home confinement while on pre-trial, before I went in for 5 years. I got ~7 months halfway house, and I think I could’ve gotten home confinement if I had a place to go to and job. My mom lived…like literally next door to a school, and I wanted to move in w/ friends but my PO inspected it and said there were “too many electronics” and denied it. So I was stuck in the HWH until I got an apartment basically.
If it’s anything like pretrial ankle monitor, it’s PROBABLY not that bad, but entirely up to the officer in charge. At the time years ago, I was able to be out and about between 8am and 8pm. I was “working” for my friends’ family by running errands and driving around, so my PO felt that 8-8 was fine. And to be honest it usually was. I think if I had a job or good reason to need to be out later I could’ve finagled it.
It was embarrassing, I always wore pants even when it was 110 outside, but all in all not a big deal. What was annoying was that I was denied travel to the next state for a wedding. I found out once I got to prison that a friend who had the same charge and same PO, was allowed to go to another state to just vacation for several days while on ankle monitor.
Feds generally follow the residency guidelines of the state, however I know two instances where they exceeded the state. One they denied a home because the top floor overlooked a neighbors back yard where kids lived. The other was denied because his mom’s house shared a fence with a “park”. He appealed and won. Because the state has no proximity restriction and the park was just a watershed reserve, not a real park.
As for HC, mine was after RRC, but before end of sentence, it may be different. I had a monitor, I could go outside, but was warned not to leave property without permission. I had to schedule my work days with RRC. Call in to get permission to go to mailbox, Dr appointments, and grocery shopping. Really couldn’t go anywhere else.
One thing I learned was if you go straight from prison to home, then the PO office manages you immediately. If you go to RRC, even for a day, the RRC manages you until your release date when the PO takes over
