## Volunteering while on SSI and its impact on the decision making process

Hi there!

I have come across information suggesting that it is possible to volunteer while receiving SSI, as long as it does not exceed a certain number of hours. However, I am currently in the process of waiting for a decision on my SSI claim, and I am wondering if engaging in volunteer work could potentially affect the outcome of that decision.

There is a cat shelter near where I live, and I am interested in volunteering with them. I am concerned that this could potentially jeopardize my application, as there is a fear that by volunteering, it may be seen as evidence that I am capable of working. (It seems absurd to think that spending a few hours a week taking care of cats could be equated to being able to work, but I have heard stories of individuals being denied for seemingly illogical reasons.)

I want to keep things simple, but I also want to contribute and help out in any way possible.

Any information or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Fellow cat lover here, and it’s awesome that you want to volunteer to help the kittehs! While volunteering a couple hours here and there is probably not likely to affect the outcome of your claim, I’d say it would be best to hold off until your case is decided. Just to be safe.

Until you’re approved there’s lots of volunteer activities you can do that are disability friendly such as taking pics/vids of the new cats to post online to help get them adopted, coordinating rescue with groups in your state (posting for drivers and coordinating pick up times, finding and vetting fosters, etc), online fundraising, etc. All of this is online or phone.

    >I’ve read that volunteering can possibly “prove” to them that you can work. (Me volunteering a couple of hours a week to take care of cats does not mean I can work

Uh, yeah, yeah it does. If you can volunteer for a couple hours of week, you can work the same amount.

If you’re only volunteering for a few hours, it’s not likely going to have an impact on the actual decision. But let’s not pretend that anyone can volunteer *only* but not work (all things equal), that’s just a ridiculous thing to say.
