Without rental properties or business income there just aren’t that many tricks to reduce your taxes. You might want a CPA to review them but I doubt you’ll get much value out of a CPA preparing them.

You do have to be willing to invest the time and learning.

I had a similar situation when I was a Capt and the tax software said I owed $3600 in taxes. Tried a different software and still owed the same amount.

Hired a CPA, paid $400 and got a $40 return instead of owing money. I’ve used one ever since. Worth every dollar IMO.

Now I’m a bit older, multiple rental properties, wife has multiple jobs in multiple states, we file state taxes in 5 different states… only costs me $1000 for them to file everything. It takes me about 30 minutes to fill out and submit all my stuff to them and then I’m done with taxes for the year.

    Love it. Highly recommend.

I’d say CPA and other tax experts are most valuable for tax planning. If you’re unsure how a certain action will affect your taxes or you want to know more about what you could do to avoid taxes, they can help with that.

Once you’re filing, most tax software is pretty good at taking you through the process and there aren’t many places where you have options that will change the outcome.

It can also be worthwhile for the same reason hiring a housekeeper or a lawn care professional can be worth it. You can probably do it cheaper, but you can save yourself time and stress. I know people for whom a few hundred dollars wouldn’t be a big deal, but they spend weeks stressing out over their taxes. They might be better served by spending the money and sending all their documents to a pro.

My wife and I have been H&R Block for the past few years and only costs us a few hundred dollars

I’ve tried every free and paid service out there when filing taxes and nobody seems to be able to figure out what to do about income earned in multiple states. Last year I even went to a free service in our current military town, where several of the CPAs were former service members themselves. Everyone was stumped. I’ve just accepted that tax season for me will always involve hours of researching the appropriate laws for whatever situations apply and praying that the IRS doesn’t come for me. Free H&R Block through OneSource is a nice bonus but their pros told me some incorrect information last year so I’ll just continue to do it on my own.
