## Situation of a Part-Time Retail Worker and Holiday Request Issues
I am currently working part-time at a retail job while attending university. In the week beginning March 25th, I received my exam timetable for the upcoming exams scheduled in the April-May period. It is essential to note that my company policy requires at least a 2-week notice for holiday requests. Despite this, on March 27th, I submitted a holiday request for the period from April 22nd to May 3rd, providing almost 4 weeks notice. Additionally, I also requested a separate holiday period from April 10th to May 14th-20th. Surprisingly, on April 11th, my first request was rejected while the second request was approved.
I believe the decision to reject my initial request was unfair, and it displayed negligence on part of the management. Usually, holiday requests are approved or rejected promptly, within a maximum of three days. However, in this case, it took 15 days to reject my request, which raises suspicions. It seems that there was a delay in processing my request, possibly due to the absence of the usual person handling holiday requests. This situation left me in a difficult position of finding cover for my days off, jeopardizing my academic commitments and financial stability.

No, an employer can tell you when to take holidays and can reject your requests
You have the right to the statutory minimum holiday allowance. There is no explicit right that this is when you want to take it. Your employer can theoretically (with appropriate notice) tell you when to take leave and cancel it (again with appropriate notice). Your contract may say something different, so check it.
Raise it with your manager/HR. This can likely be resolved with a conversation.
Quit. They absolutely can restrict your leave dates but you’re right – it’s not worth jeopardising your degree over it.
Give notice and explicitly cite that you cannot just not attend your exams, that you respect that they have tried to be reasonable but are unable to approve those dates, and that the only way forward is to sadly leave to ensure you are able to focus on your exams. No bridges burned and it gives them chance to try again to find cover, knowing that it will cost them a worker if they can’t.
You may feel hard done by, but it’s doubtful you’d get anywhere arguing your case at Tribunal.
You could potentially have a word with your employer to explain your situation and see if they will accommodate your leave on the dates you requested. But bear in mind they hold all the cards at this point and they may well decided to terminate your employment if it looks like (to them) that you’re a “problem” employee.
Can you not take study leave? The store I was recently employed at has multiple students off for exams. Check company policy
