In BC, a person is considered a minor until they are 19 years old.

That said, there’s not much stopping a 17 or 18 year old from leaving home. Even if their parents report to police that their child ran away, police will check that they are safe and that’s about it.

Your friend may want to consider discussing her situation with a school counsellor, or calling the Ministry of Child and Family (MCFD). Its hard to live on your own and still finish school, and not finishing school will limit her future options and ability to support herself at more than a subsistance level. There are some assistance programs for older teenagers who leave their homes due to abuse, as an alternative to going into foster care. The program used to be called “Agreements with Young Adults”, but its currently being replaced with a new program and I’m not sure of the details. She may also qualify for student loans that don’t look at her parents finances.
