## Going to School Full Time and Receiving Financial Aid

I am currently attending school full time and receiving financial aid. My husband, who is on active duty, has suggested that I use his GI bill for school even though my costs are already covered by my FAFSA. He believes that this way, I can receive both forms of aid and help with some of our bills, a concept he refers to as “double dipping.” I am aware that as he already receives BAH, I would not be eligible to receive that through his GI bill. However, I am wondering if there are any other benefits to using his GI bill at this time.

If you don’t use the funds you receive based on filling out the FAFSA for educational purposes, they can become taxable income. Highly recommend consulting a tax professional about this because double dipping may cause issues based on how funds are applied to school costs.

Has he already gone through the process of transferring the GI bill to you and incurring the service commitment?

Hubs needs to do a bit of research and swing by the base education office. If the member is on active duty and receiving BAH, the spouse does NOT earn BAH while using GI Bill benefits.

I can’t remember. Does Fasfa pay you directly? I haven’t used it in ages

If FAFSA is paying all of your school expenses already, there really isn’t any benefit – if his Post 9/11 GI Bill paid your tuition/fees, all the Pell Grant funds would go to you but would be treated as taxable income for any amount not used to pay authorized education expenses.
