Mail Theft and Fraud: Dealing with a Troublesome Post Office in New Jersey

The Potential Threat of Mail Theft

Having my checks stolen, washed, and rewritten not once, but twice, has left me feeling incredibly violated and vulnerable. The first incident, in which a $9,600 check was cashed, resulted in me taking the necessary steps of reporting it to my bank and filing a police report. Fortunately, in the end, I was able to recover my money. However, this recent incident involving a tax check for $9,350 has left me feeling stunned and defeated. The fact that both checks were stolen from the same post office is particularly unsettling. It has forced me to close all my accounts and establish new ones as a precautionary measure. The post office has repeatedly failed in its duty to safeguard my mail, and it’s clear that I need to take further action to address this issue.

Yes, suspected identity theft from mail should be reported [directly to the Postal Inspection Service](https://ehome.uspis.gov/mailtheft/idtheft.aspx). It’s not a bad idea to try the local postmaster too, but USPIS is actually in charge of investigating the crime.

Report it to the Postal Inspectors. I’m from NJ and businesses and people in my town had the same issue. I try to pay everything electronically now because of that.

A client of mine was hit by a clever scam. Same check number, same amount but written to someone completely different. The mail was dropped off at the post office and going to a PO box so it had to be a postal employee in on it. Lots of check fraud going around in my area the last year or so, much more than in the past.

People are saying to STOP sending checks via mail. We’ve had 3 packages stolen via USPS the last 2 weeks. One via FedEx and One via UPS. Shit is getting crazy. People feel entitled to steal whatever they want and they think they can get away with it. Ours most likely (The USPS ones) were stolen at the Nashville USPS because they sat there for 7 days before finding their way to WV and then back to KY where the boxes were empty and some high priced shit was taken out of them…

They’re holding the envelopes up to the light to see if there are checks inside. Is there a way you can wrap the check in regular paper so they think it’s a letter? You can get on the NJ USPS website and write a review and submit your displeasure with your check/money being stolen. There you can also find the headmasters name and contact them about the situation. That’s what we had to end up doing.

There’s actually an ongoing issue with check fraud in multiple post offices.
My recommendation is that you stop using personal checks and use certified cashier checks or money orders.
    Or go online.

File a complaint with the postal inspector. ItÔÇÖs pretty obvious someone inside that PO is the thief! Also, you need to stop paying by physical checkÔÇöthere are so many other ways to pay now that would not put you at risk of check washing.

If somebody stole a check once they had your routing and account number. They also knew your check number.

You should have closed your accounts after the first one.

Ask Bannon, postal inspectors do not fuck around. Contact them directly.

I am sorry to hear of the corruption in the USPS. Report it here in full with all your evidence:

I also work for USPS and the Inspection service is the way to go. Someone at that local post office is the problem. In my over 25 years I’ve only known of one example of one employee who was a supervisor stealing, in this case gift cards. He was set up and promptly fired.

Besides the postal inspection service , you can also try reaching out to your local congressperson.

Your bank almost certainly offers online payment services – both electronic transfer where appropriate and mailed checks where electronic transfer is not available.

Either way – even if your bank mails a check on your behalf – you should be 100% protected against this type of fraud.
