****** just grabbed a
Your unit has to code you in a way that waives drill pay. You realize that you are only waiving VA for the days at drill correct?
HereÔÇÖs some reasons to take drill:
1. SGLI premiums come out of drill pay. If you waive it, you will have to pay it by check.
2. If you waive drill, you stop paying into Social Security.
3. Do you trust your unit to code you correctly so that you donÔÇÖt miss out on retirement points? I donÔÇÖt trust mine.
Be aware that you will have a debt for the drill days that overlap with your back pay.
ThereÔÇÖs a lot of confusion on how this works. If you give me your rating, rank, TIS, number of dependents and marital status, I can do the math and make sure you are making the right decision.
Lol this is so funny… you can’t. I was active duty and when I EAS’d I still had time on my IRR, so when a PSR randomly contacted me a couple years after I got out I said fuck it why not, shoot the shit with some Marines again? Sure. Anyway, I did some time with a reserve Unit near my home location for 3 months and during 1 of those I did their 2 week annual Field Op Training (lucky me), wasnt my speed so I left after that (super boring) anyway the point is during this time the VA paid me but since the Unit paid me also the VA took back for the days I was working with the Reserve Unit. So yeah.
There isnt a “loop hole” lmao at least not one I am aware of, you can’t have both. Not that hard to understand lol.
They prorate your Va pay by the day, so a 4 point drill means you forfeit 4 of 30 days. You make more money by letting the VA recoup your pay.
For example: your drill is 250 per point, so 1,000 a month. You get 1,200 VA pay a month. If you forfeit drill pay you lose 1,000 per month. If you forfeit VA pay itÔÇÖs only $160 per month.
Edit: yes, the drill pay is taxed, but you will still come out on top my repaying the VA debt (itÔÇÖs interest free). And then you have to factor SGLI and social security like SSG_Rock points out.
