Michigan Senate Approves Clean Energy Bills, but Faces Opposition

LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – Last week, the Michigan Senate approved a package of clean energy bills that will now move to the House for further consideration. However, the legislation is facing pushback from business groups who argue that it could have a significant negative impact on their financial performance and overall operations.

Mike Alaimo, the director of environmental and energy affairs for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, expressed concerns about the bills, stating, “These bills taken together are job killers; they’re economic development killers. They’ll put our state back potentially decades because we’ve hamstrung ourselves to a few types of technologies.”

The proposed legislation consists of three key bills. Firstly, companies would be required to generate 100% of their energy from renewable sources by 2040. Additionally, the bills aim to strengthen Michigan’s energy waste reduction program and grant the Michigan Public Service Commission the authority to consider equity and environmental justice when making decisions regarding energy companies’ future operations.

Alaimo argues that these requirements will burden energy customers, including businesses, with increased costs. Even if residential ratepayers are protected to some extent, businesses typically pass on the rising costs to their customers. Consequently, this could result in higher electricity prices for households and make Michigan less economically competitive.

However, proponents of the legislation, such as Courtney Bourgoin from Evergreen Action, believe that the bills will actually save money for businesses and consumers. Bourgoin highlights the grants available within President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which would support the transition to clean energy and reduce costs.

In addition to cost savings, the package of bills and other clean energy proposals being considered in the legislature aim to improve energy reliability. Bourgoin explains that the inclusion of an energy storage target would enhance backup power capabilities and enable the utilization of wind and solar energy during periods when they are not actively generated. This increased reliability would benefit both businesses and households.
