SPRING VALLEY, Minn. – City leaders in Spring Valley are excited about the prospect of transforming Broadway Avenue into a vibrant gathering place for the community. The Spring Valley Business Alliance has been diligently working for the past year and a half on what they call the Broadway Project, aiming to revitalize and enhance the downtown area.

The Vision

The Broadway Project aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment by implementing various changes along Broadway Avenue. One of the proposed changes includes using planters to narrow the streets and create a calmer traffic flow. Additionally, the project seeks to incorporate benches throughout the area, providing people with comfortable spots to rest and take in the sights.

These changes have already been tested during the city’s Wednesdays on Broadway events earlier this year, which presented positive outcomes. Dan Freeman, the treasurer of the Spring Valley Business Alliance, noticed a significant increase in community engagement and interaction.

“I was starting to see classmates I haven’t seen in decades and people I know that live in Spring Valley but never run into them,” he said. “They were coming down here and enjoying what downtown Spring Valley had to offer.”

Implementation Plan

While the Broadway Project is an ambitious undertaking, it will be executed in several phases, including fundraising and design. Collaborating with the engineering firm Bolton & Menk, the project is expected to take around two to four years to complete. Despite the lengthy timeline, Freeman is confident that the end result will be well worth the wait.

“You need a central location to gather as a community, and I think Broadway Project will provide that type of gathering place,” he said.

Community Involvement

As part of their commitment to inclusivity and gathering input from all stakeholders, the Spring Valley Business Alliance intends to host a meeting in January to gather valuable insights and opinions from business owners and community members. They encourage everyone to attend and voice their thoughts on the project.

Moreover, on November 13th, the Spring Valley City Council will discuss the Broadway Project, with representatives from Bolton & Menk present to share potential ideas and insights.
