    >how much time is required to be between transactions to purchase more pain relief over the counter at the same store?

As far as I am aware there isn’t one, It is based on each transaction (two transactions immediately after each other would, I believe, by the letter of the law be legal.

That said, their store policy and procedures may dictate not to allow this and as such can refuse to sell you the second transaction. This is their right as a store.

Legally, a retailer cannot sell more than 100 paracetamol tablets (or equivalent) in a single transaction.

While not law, MHRA guidance states that no more than two packets of any analgesic should be sold in a single transaction. (Not relevant to retailers, but the RPSGB recommends pharmacists use their professional judgement when selling more than than 32 paracetamol tablets).

Most supermarkets will have their policies inline with the MHRA’s guidance, as it’s recognised good practice.

Whilst legally you could buy more, the retailer is perfectly within their rights to refuse the sale. You could try going in again later, but the store could simply refuse to serve you. Likely on the basis that you’re trying to circumvent their policy. (Plus, the retailer would be protecting themselves from criticism should any harm come to you following the sale).

This legislation was introduced in 1998 in an attempt to reduce the number of accidental and deliberate self-poisoning deaths. It worked:

The law says that they cannot sell more than 100 tablets of paracetamol (or equivalent dosage if in liquid form) in “a single retail transaction”.

But the circumstances you describe have nothing to do with the law and everything to do with Aldi’s policy. I would presume it is the same as most retailers’ policy, which is that you can’t buy more than two items containing paracetamol at the same time. If you try to get around the policy by checking out two items, then turning round and walking back in and trying to check out another two items, they would be perfectly entitled to say something like “you’re trying to circumnavigate the spirit of a policy that is designed to ensure compliance with the law and protect customers’ safety, and as such you’re now banned from our shop.”

  • n3m0sum

The law is around paracetamol, and people intentionally or intentionally (through mixing cold and flu meds with paracetamol) overdose and injure or kill themselves.

Many shops have simplified their policies to include all pain meds and cold/flu meds. Why, because people are dim (including staff). It was causing arguments about “my cousins daughter’s brother-in-law bought 4 boxes of pain killers in their ASDA last week” nonsense.

Staff are not trained to explain that some of those were probably a combination of the risky paracetamol and NSAIDs such as aspirin and Ibuprofen. Most often customers do not want to hear it. They just see some unfair variable policy that is preventing them from getting their meds of choice.

So it’s easier to have a consistent policy. People may not love it, but don’t see it as “unfair”, and it creates less drama at the tills.

Due to a tendinitis issue, I once had to take 400mg of ibuprofen 4 times a day for 28 days. 8 a day, I was getting 2 boxes every 4 days.

    >So out of sheer interest and mainly pettiness; how much time is required to be between transactions to purchase more pain relief over the counter at the same store?

Out of pettiness, they can simply refuse to sell you anything else, and ask you to leave.

  • Ethel-The-Aardvark

If you go into a pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist, they can often sell you much bigger packets. Sometimes they might ask if youÔÇÖve been told to take them by a GP (happened when my daughter had to take the maximum safe dose of paracetamol for a while), but last week I was just offered the big packs of ibuprofen and paracetamol in our local pharmacy when I asked for the generic ones.

Off-the-shelf in supermarkets will always be a maximum of two small packs/bottles (including e.g. cold remedies that include painkillers).
