Free Support Available for Southwark Small Businesses to Lower Carbon Emissions

Many small businesses in Southwark borough are eager to reduce their carbon emissions but lack the financial means to do so. Recognizing this barrier, London Business Improvement District, Better Bankside, has launched an initiative to provide support and guidance to 160 small businesses in decarbonizing their operations.

The SME Climate Hub has identified that these small businesses face an “Intention Gap” ÔÇô a lack of action resulting from a lack of skills, knowledge, funding, and time. It is crucial to bridge this gap to ensure that they contribute towards London’s 2030 net-zero targets. Currently, SMEs account for about 40% of the UK’s non-domestic emissions.

The Southwark Climate Collective (SCC) will specifically focus on reducing emissions in four key areas: energy, waste, freight, and supply chains. By providing tailored sustainability support, small businesses will receive the necessary resources and guidance to take effective action in decarbonizing their operations.

Nicole Gordon, CEO of Better Bankside, emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses in their decarbonization journey. She stated, “[SMEs] want to do the right thing but often don’t have access to the tools, resources, or technical expertise. Supporting business decarbonization measures is critical to us achieving our wider climate objectives but can also play an important cost-saving and efficiency role in their day-to-day operations.”

This project has been made possible through a generous grant of £653,000 from the Mayor of London. The funding will enable the provision of free support and guidance to small businesses in Southwark.
